Speedwatch in Downswood – A Call for Community Action
3rd June 2026
Over recent months, we have been fortunate to work closely with the excellent Bearsted Speedwatch team, who have generously shared their experience and provided us with the training needed to get started. Their support has shown just how effective a well‑run Speedwatch group can be in improving safety on our local roads.
We now feel the time is right to establish our own Downswood Speedwatch team, enabling us to carry out sessions more regularly and in the places that matter most to our residents. This is very much a community‑driven initiative: it is about keeping Downswood safe, protecting our families, and ensuring that our roads reflect the standards we all expect.
The scheme is fully supported by Kent Police, who provide the equipment and oversee the programme. Speedwatch is widely encouraged across the county because it works, it changes driver behaviour, raises awareness, and gives residents a direct role in improving road safety.
Training is straightforward, and you can give as much or as little time as you wish. Whether you can spare an hour a month or a morning a week, your involvement will make a real difference. If you’re curious, we will happily arrange a taster session so you can see what’s involved before committing.
If you would like to register your interest, please email the Parish Clerk at:
clerk@downspc.org
Together, we can build a safer Downswood , one session, one volunteer, and one slowed‑down driver at a time.
