Speed Watch
2nd March 2026
Community Speed Watch (CSW) stands as a frontline defence in road safety, coordinated by Kent Police and powered by trained local volunteers. Armed with approved speed‑indication devices, these teams work to prevent tragedy, safeguard neighbourhoods, and remind drivers that speed limits are not suggestions—they are protections.
Since Church Road was widened and resurfaced, residents have voiced growing alarm. What was once a quiet route has increasingly become a high‑speed shortcut, especially when Willington Street grinds to a halt. The character of the road has changed, and with it, the risks.
Acting on these concerns, Downswood Parish Council approached Kent Police and secured permission for the Bearsted Speed Watch Team to take action. Today, they did exactly that. In just 90 minutes, 100 vehicles swept past their position, watched closely by Parish Council members.
The team targeted the 30mph zone at the Sutton Road end (as you drive into Downswood). What they recorded was sobering: 10 drivers exceeding 35mph, several pushing beyond 40mph, and one vehicle hurtling through at 50mph.
Every one of these vehicles will now be reported to Kent Police.
The team concluded that the level of speeding was far higher than anticipated. As a result, they will return weekly—on varying days—to monitor speeds of vehicles entering and leaving Downswood and again, report offenders to Kent Police.
To reinforce this effort, several members of Downswood Parish Council have volunteered to undergo training and join the Speed Watch team, ensuring that this vital work continues with strength and consistency.
